A core part of @simshillsharedharvest mission is t A core part of @simshillsharedharvest mission is to be rooted in the community. Besides growing food for the people of Bristol and providing opportunities for local new entrant farmers, we’ve also been running a Soil Connections Group for anyone affected by the asylum process in the UK. Run by one of our growers, each Thursday morning is dedicated to various horticultural tasks and spending time together outdoors. We have fortnightly lunch and give members the space to share their existing growing and plant knowledge.
People waiting for their asylum decision in the UK aren’t allowed to work, which leaves them in a disempowering state of limbo with few material means or ways to develop their skills and passions. We strongly believe that everyone has the right to connect with the land, their food and the people around them in a meaningful way, and we stand against the current hostile environment for migrants in the UK.
A long-standing member of the Soil Connections Group has been Ali, who farmed in Syria before coming to Bristol as an asylum-seeker: After volunteering at Sims Hill, he launched his own business ‘Rocket Man’ rocketmanproduce in June of this year. He now grows a range of organic greens and vegetables – including rocket, obviously! We couldn’t be more pleased for him ☺️.

Refer a friend scheme Are you a @simshillsharedha Refer a friend scheme
Are you a @simshillsharedharvest member – or do you have a friend who is? Then you should know that we’re running a “refer a friend” scheme until the end of August.
As a Sims Hill member, you could get yourself a bumper share of scrummy summer veg AND a free (food-themed) print for both you and a friend, if you refer them before the end of August! They can sign up for either a full share or a half share. Simply get them to say you referred them, and you will both get a lovely print in your pick-up point of choice.
What if you’re not a member but you know someone who is? Well, if you’ve been thinking about giving us a go, then now is your moment! Speak to your friend and put them down as the person who referred you, and hey presto – rewards for both of you. We can’t wait to hear from you!
Let's feed more mouths through word of mouth! Find out how to sign up on our website!

A day in the life of a grower at @simshillsharedha A day in the life of a grower at @simshillsharedharvest:
Every day is a busy day on the farm, but nothing quite compares to a Thursday! This is when we pack all the veg bags that go out to members, with the help of our stalwart team of Thursday volunteers. The bags then get distributed to our various pick-up points around the city, where our members can pick up their shares just in time for the weekend.
While all the vegetables are being weighed out in the packing shed, one of our growers runs our Soil Connections group, which is open to anyone affected by the asylum process in the UK. We’ll tell you a bit more about that in one of our next posts.
In the afternoons, we’re usually busy planting. At the moment, it’s time to get the winter crops in – yes, already! When it’s dry, we need to make sure everything gets enough water. And when it’s wet, we need to be careful not to get the tractor stuck! No two days are ever the same, and we love it…

What's in season at the moment at @simshillsharedh What's in season at the moment at @simshillsharedharvest ?
Summer is at its most bountiful and our veg bags are bursting at the seams! Last week’s shares had tomatoes, French beans, aubergines, peppers, agretti, chillies, beetroot, courgettes, and of course… cucumbers!
We had to work hard for our cucumber glut this year. The plants started out strong, with a first harvest in early June, but were then attacked by red spider mites and aphids. We thought we would lose them! Thankfully, with valuable advice from other Bristol growers, we changed up their irrigation, gave them foliar sprays and got in predators to eat the pests. They have bounced back and have been going strong for the past month and a half! Phew. Glut saved 😁.

"Hi! We’re Sims Hill Shared Harvest and we grow seasonal veg in Bristol, using organic methods. We are a member-led organisation and all our members receive a share of the harvest.
We farm at the Grow Wilder site in Frenchay and on a big field on the other side of the motorway. Fun fact: that patch of land is actually called Sims Hill, hence the name! We’ve been growing vegetables cooperatively for the past twelve years and like everyone else, have had to weather a few storms recently. We’ve been able to navigate them thanks to our cracking team of growers, who are contributing endless amounts of energy, skill, care, grit and determination not only towards growing vegetables, but also running community projects and being tireless advocates for local, sustainable food growing. Meet the dream team of Anna, Petra and Maddy!
If you want to see for yourself what we’re all about, why not pop up to Grow Wilder and say hi – find us by the big polytunnels towards the back of the site. We also run a volunteer day every third Sunday of the month where everyone is welcome. We’d love to meet you!"

At the weekend we hosted our landmatching event, s At the weekend we hosted our landmatching event, supported by @landworkersalliance through the Defra New Entrant Support Scheme.
We had 30 people attending - a mix of new entrants looking for land and land owners, and there was some really great connections made and information shared about additional land opportunities available. These kind of face to face events are so important for people to gather and meet and explore potential opportunities. We also had some amazing maps made of the West of England Combined Authority region as part of the project, including one of “hope spots” that highlights the best growing land in the region.
We’ll be updating our website in the coming weeks with up to date resources and information so watch this space!
We are running a land matching event on Sunday 23r We are running a land matching event on Sunday 23rd April from 2-5pm.
This event is aiming to bring together public and private landowners with land-seekers who are looking to increase local food production.
This event will be a unique opportunity to make connections, hopefully leading to land matches that will give new entrant farmers the chance to develop food growing enterprises.
Visit our website (link in bio) to learn more or email bristol.land.access@gmail.com for more info or if you are a landowner in the area!
